Name: Jim
Birthday: 6/30/1986
Gender: Male

Interests: Well the thing about me is that I can easily become interested in something VERY quickly. If you know me at all you know that my main interest is or course MUSIC, followed by COMPUTERS, and then video games as a close third. This makes me sound really shallow and whatnot, but those are just 3 of the MANY things I do enjoy.
Expertise: I can safely say that I only have expertise in Music and Video games haha. I think that if I was an "expert" at any subject it would be English.
Occupation: Customer service/support
Industry: Retail

Fall, come already.

The weather is seriously pissing me off as of late. I chose to stay in central Illinois because I like the differences in temperature between the months of September and April. I enjoy the cold, and it is hard to enjoy it when it continues to be 80 + degrees everyday. It is mid-October for god's sake, lets bring on the bitter cold.

Note: no more than 4 months from now, I will be writing a blog portraying my hatred for the cold. It's just one of those things.

This semester is flying by. I honestly feel just as busy as last semester, only this semester I have 6 less credit hours. I'm not really sure how this is possible; perhaps it's my own doing. I'm ready to be done so I can really start to learn the ins and outs of the English language. I just need some time to study my career (journalism) without worrying about the roles of Greek women and memorizing Shakespeare's Sonnet 18. This is what sucks about changing majors so late;  there is no wiggle room for electives. Unfortunately, my last semester of my undergraduate degree will be tedious and very stressful. I can handle it.

I started WoW with Scott and Josh a couple of days ago. As fun as it seems, I don't see the reason for the hype. To be quite honest, it is a little boring. My idea of fun isn't going to slay Kobolb miners for brass pennies. I won't pay to play the game (I'm doing a free trial), nor will it effect my studies. It's a good time waster though.

I also finished Brisingr last Thursday. I loved it, but I found the ending to be very clifhangerish - in a bad way. I feel like the author didn't know how to finish it, so he didn't. I cringe to thinnk how long it will take to finish the last book, but alas I understand, writing a book is very tedious. I have to write a book review over this for the Decaturian and I'm not sure how forgiving I will be.

Let May come soon.

Unfortunate

It's tough to say this, but the once bustling music scene that held Decatur's reputation at a respectful level, is now finished.

There are still great bands of course, Greenwood gets better every time I hear them, Emily Henderson is frankly amazing, but the bands that once inhabited this town are nonexistent. It troubles me to see my adolescent and teenage dream flow not only from my fingertips, but from the town and people surrounding me as well.

Remember if you will, (and this won't relate to you if you weren't a part of my life during this period), back to the time in our lives where every weekend was either playing a show or seeing a show. New bands emerged to be a part of the scene (and I use scene very carefully here, I'm not trying to use it negatively), and it was all about what equipment you were going to get, or what happened after the show. Nowadays, people do their own thing. This post may be a mute point, whereas, I am relating my personal experiences with music - there could be a generation going on right now that enjoys music just the same as I did, but frankly I don't see it.

After last night's embarrassingly poor turnout for the Grace United Methodist show, my suspicion that the appreciation of music in Decatur is gone was confirmed.

With this confirmation, I can also see that my youth is gone as well. No more buying band T-shirts to support my favorite bands at hot topic, or girl jeans (of which I never wore), hair greases or eyeliner, these things that people surrounding me during the Soibomb years did are finished. Screaming bands, overly distorted guitars, sub-par metal riffs; these things are all finished. I never thought I'd be sad to see them go (and I'm not convinced I'm not), but it's what was happening during that time that made it fun.

Hanging out with the GW guys every weekend because we had a show together, girlfriends tagging along and being there after a show was finished when no one else was, knowing you have an explicit bond with 4 or 5 other guys that no one can take away. I miss these days, but it is time to let them go.

I do hope I keep the friendships from this time, they mean a lot to me. I still want to get back involved with music, but I know that it will be nothing serious (as far as I can tell). I will always humor the idea of doing something musically, it's fun and rewarding, but knowing your priorities is the first step to growing up.

I realize this post is somewhat of a melancholy rant about the past, most of mine are. But the fact of the matter is, music is important and it's important for the younger generation to keep that in mind. I hope to see more bands emerging in the future, for everyone's sake.

Beginning

And just as the title says, I am beginning a new part of my life as of a week ago. I've finally moved out of my house, and much to my surprise, it isn't as hard to live alone as I'd thought. Granted, I now live with two roommates (Tim and Josh Rose) but as far as living is concerned, I'm flying solo.

My new address is 2302 W. Center St. For those of you familiar with the area, it is about 5 houses down from Tim's; about 6 blocks from my parents' house. Although it wasn't a far move, it was enough to get a bigger space, and more importantly a space of my own. Josh is a cool guy, very understanding and laid back. He lets us do as we please, as long as we don't destroy the house. I have a pretty awesome room I think (I will upload pictures soon). Much larger than my last and also with a much larger closet for all of my stuff.

The school year is approaching, and I believe that studies and school will become easier in this kind of environment. I like to be alone, and I can pretty much be alone all I want here. It has been hard for me to update this recently, not because I don't have anything to say, but more because I don't know how to collect my thoughts as of late. I still live the same lifestyle, playing 360, going out occasionally, watching movies, but I also do adult things like my laundry, dishes, lawns, etc. I think this is a great way for me to fully be independent.

Last Sunday Scott, Tim, Josh and I went to IKEA in Bolingbrook, IL. The 2.5 hour ride there was pretty uneventful, except for the near miss side collision by Tim and his White Suburban foe. That woke me up. I had a shitty nights sleep the night before. Zack had given me a queen bed to replace my child's twin mattress, and it was great until I felt the softness of the mattress. The bed is great, but a wee bit too firm for me. I didn't sleep well so I decided to go to work way early (5 a.m. vs 12:30). I got my shift done, went to Target and purchased a Memory Foam mattress topper. Now I'm not easily persuaded, and the reviews didn't help my skepticism one bit, but I took a chance and dropped $80 on this thing. I got it home and what a relief, it was exactly what I needed to make my mattress amazing. Unfortunately, this is where we left for Bolingbrook.

So with the sleep deprived journey to IKEA, Scott and I made fun of the fact that although you turned off the air conditioning in the back of Josh's Explorer, it still blew a pretty nice breeze anyway, the NUMEROUS Genesis and Phil Collins songs on the XM radio and plenty of hypothetical situation jokes. It was a fun day, and after 2 hours sprawling around IKEA looking for awesome things we "need" to make it through life, we decided to load the Explorer and get home.

We had planned for Scott to illegally ride in the back of the Explorer due to space issues, but somehow I managed to get all the boxes in the Explorer while still leaving two seats in the back for both Tim and Scott. We decided to get something to eat before we left, so the majority of us chose Portillo's. I had ENTIRELY too much food, but I only eat there once every 500 years or so, so i figured I'd better eat hearty. Josh had White Castle. After eating we started home and I ALMOST made it without falling asleep, but somewhere just before Wapella, I conked out.

I wake up as we are getting gas. We dropped Scott off and went to our house. I tried mounting the shelf I bought just above my bed (Again pictures coming) but it is an exterior wall, and the house is brick, so it is nearly impossible to screw into this hardened surface. Somehow I get the shelf to stay (and God help me I hope it stays forever), but I still question its strength and longevity. The other assembled their dressers, desks and other assorted items.

I got my books this week, and already there is an issue with a book. We didn't need one of the ones I bought, so today I went to exchange it for the cash. I was ready to hang out and do whatever for the rest of the night until I was reminded that I work. This sucked, so I did that and now here i am.

I must say, I am very pleased with the way things are going for me right now (with the exception of a few minor things), but all in all, life is good and hopefully when school starts, I will be prepared to man up and get good grades while supporting myself.

Wish me luck!
